Hello again, friends, and welcome to my very first FREE crocheted super bulky flower pattern!!

It’s been almost one year since I designed my very first crochet flower pattern (the Dauntless Dandelion - April 2024), and looking back, I had NO idea how this adventure of designing crocheted flowers would change the course of my business.

It’s been on my mind lately to create a free pattern just to show my appreciation for how much love and support I’ve been shown with these floral designs. They really are magical, and I want everyone to have the chance to make some.

With that being said, if you haven’t been sure if you’ll enjoy making these crocheted flowers - now you have the chance to try before you buy!

All of my crocheted flower patterns have somewhat similar constructions in that they begin at the top of the flower and then finish at the bottom of the stem before creating the leaf. The geraniums specifically are most similar to my Forget-Me-Nots pattern with how it’s constructed, so if you’ve had the pleasure to make those already then you should catch on to these instructions a little easier!

The geranium pattern is worked by creating 8 separate small flowers and then crocheting them together to make one larger flower cluster. You will be using stitch markers to mark the beginning of each round, as well as marking certain loops you will come back to work in later. Finally, the leaf is crocheted separately and then stitched onto the flower stem. Be sure to read through the pattern carefully at least once before starting. Photos are included to help you along the way!

This is an intermediate level pattern, which means it will be easier for you if you have experience crocheting with super bulky size 6 yarn, and experience with amigurumi.

If you love this flower pattern, make sure you check out the 15 other crocheted flower patterns I have in my shop on Etsy! Make sure you check each listing, as I offer 4 separate pattern bundles at a discount!

You can also find the ad-free pdf of the Geranium Flowers pattern individually in my shop for a low price, or included in my Spring Florals Bundle!

Let’s talk yarn! All of my flower patterns are designed specifically with super bulky size 6 yarn. Personally, my favorite yarn to use for these flowers is Bernat Blanket yarn.

Here are a few Bernat Blanket options for stem colors:

Materials

Pattern Details

  • This pattern is written in English, using U.S. crochet terms.

  • Finished measurements: 13” tall

  • This is a low-sew pattern. The only part that is sewn is when you attach the leaf to the flower stem.

  • This pattern is worked by creating 8 separate small flowers and then crocheting them together to make one larger flower cluster. You will be using stitch markers to mark the beginning of each round, as well as marking certain loops you will come back to work in later. Finally, the leaf is crocheted separately and then stitched onto the flower stem. Be sure to read through the pattern carefully at least once before starting. Photos are included to help you along the way!

  • This pattern uses the “yarn under/yarn over” method when working its single crochet stitches. This method helps keep your stitches looking tighter and more even (click here for a video tutorial), which will help hide stuffing from showing through your stitches.

  • You have two options for stuffing the stem: you can either use stuffing materials OR a wooden dowel. If you are using stuffing materials, be sure to stuff your stem as you go (every 2 inches or so) and to stuff very lightly.

Pattern

Flowers (make 8)

With Color A and hook size 7.00mm

Rnd 1: place 5 sc in MR. (5)

The next rnd will be worked in the front loops of rnd 1. Before beg, place an extra st marker in the back loop of the 1st AND last sts to help when working the stem in rnd 3. (photo A1).

Rnd 2: [(sl st, ch 2, dc, ch 2, sl st) in flo of next st] x 5.

(5 small petals) (photo A2)

Fasten off.

Rnd 3: join Color B to either marked back loop

of rnd 1 leaving a small tail for closing the gap (photo A3), sc in each back loop around (your last st should be worked into the other marked st). (5 sc)

It will look like there’s small gap between your first and last sts, skip over this and continue the next rnd (photo A4). You will use your yarn tail to close this gap after you finish the flower.

Rnd 4: (both loops), sc in each st around. (5 sc)

Fasten off after 7 of the 8 flowers and weave in end. Do NOT fasten off after the 8th flower.

Use your beg yarn tail to sew the gap shut with 1 or 2 sts. Weave your yarn tail back through the center of the stem (photo A5). Tie your stem yarn tail with your flower yarn tail in one or two knots, trim the ends, then tuck the extra back into the stem of the flower (photo A6).

Continue to Flower Assembly.

Flower Assembly

With Color B and continuing from the 8th flower, you will now join your flowers while continuing to work in the round.

Rnd 1: with your flowers pointing down, pick up your next flower and attach with a sc in any st of the rnd (photo B1) (place st marker in same st to mark beg of rnd), sc in next 4 sts of same flower, sc in each of the next 5 sts on beg flower. (10 sc)

(photo B2)

Each of the next 6 flowers will be attached over 3 sts by working through the 2 layers of your flower’s stem and 1 layer of the current round (photo B3).

Rnd 2: sc in next st, [attach next flower over 3 sc, photo B4] x 3. (10 sc) (3 flowers attached total)

Rnd 3: attach next flower over next 3 sts, sc in next 2 sts, attach next flower over next 3 sts, sc in next st.

At this point you will have 1 st left.

Work your last flower over this 1 st, plus the first 2 sts of the next rnd (photo B5). End the rnd here. (10 sc)

The next st will become your new 1st st of the rnd.

(photo B6)

Stuff the center lightly.

Finished flower cluster shown in photo B7.

Continue to Stem.

Stem

With Color B

Rnd 4: [inv dec] x 5. (5 sc)

Rnds 5-35: sc in each st around. (5 sc)

(30 rnds = 150 sts)

Fasten off leaving a tail for closing, but do NOT close yet. Continue to Stem Leaf before finishing.

Stem Leaf

With Color B

The following sts in () will be worked all together into a MR.

Leaf: (ch 5, etr x 9, ch 5, sl st) in MR (photo C1).

Pull ring tail to close tightly (photo C2).

Fasten off. Sew leaf to the stem at rnd 10 or 11 of the stem with 3-4 sts.

(photo C3)

Continue to Finishing.

Finishing

To finish your flower, insert a wooden dowel into the stem from the bottom up (photo C4). If the stem doesn’t quite cover the dowel at the bottom, feel free to work an extra row or two as needed to make sure the entire dowel is covered. Be careful not to push the dowel too far into your flower or it will poke through the top.

Use a tapestry needle to weave your yarn tail through the outside loop of each st around, pull to close and weave in your end.

You’ve officially finished your Geraniums! Enjoy!
