One of the things I enjoy doing as a designer is taking my experiences and circumstances into consideration when I’m looking for inspiration on a new crochet pattern design.

In this case, I was inspired by the most amazing creature. A creature I had the privilege to see in person during our time here living in Alaska - the beautiful puffin.

While our time living in this beautiful state is short, it’s a time in my life that has molded and shaped me even more into the person I am today.

Getting to design this pattern is like bookmarking this page in my life that I want to remember forever.

I remember sitting in our guest bedroom trying my hand at crochet pattern designing for the very first time. I wanted to design a puffin pattern because I hadn’t come across any I really loved. I came up with my first draft of the pattern, but quickly became overwhelmed because at this point I had never fully formatted or written up a pattern before.

I was nervous to even share a photo of the design, so I tucked it away and forgot about it. Fast forward to over a year and several self-published designs later and I finally worked up the courage to take this design back out.

And, it was actually really cool to see…because I quickly realized how much the skills I had learned over the last year were going to help me figure out how to make this pattern exactly how I wanted it. It was a challenging design, but I can’t even tell you how excited I was when it first clicked!

We all start somewhere when it comes to crochet pattern designing and this was a huge part in my own journey. If you’re interested in learning more about crochet pattern design, you should check out my 5 part blog series on crochet pattern designing where I walk you through my entire process and ALL the tools and resources I have used!

But…today we’re here to talk about Perceval Puffin because he’s probably the design that makes me the most proud. I never would have believed you if you had told me years ago I would design something this detailed.

Perceval Puffin is probably my favorite design to date and easily the most beloved.

His construction is a mix of no-sew and sewn on features. The beak is the part I’m most proud of…it’s construction might surprise you a bit, but you’ll have to get the pattern to see what I’m talking about. ;)

When I saw how popular Perceval became I pretty quickly knew a smaller version would most likely do well also. I had a few other designs up my sleeve already though, so I set the idea on the back burner.

Several months later I decided to dive into creating a smaller version! As soon as I was finished with him, I showed my husband and he asked if I could make one even smaller! So I took on the challenge, and that’s the story behind how my Mini AND Baby Perceval Puffin patterns were born!

I seriously LOVE and couldn’t be more proud of my little puffin family. They’re also really fun to experiment with different color combos! I think I’ll always prefer the classic black, white, yellow & orange look. But some of my puffins that have been really popular have come from mixing colors like lilac purple, maroon, green, and pink!

Yarn used:

Bernat Blanket: Burgundy Plum, Sunday Times in Frosting, Misty Green, and Ombre Orange Crush.

Most of the Perceval Puffins I’ve seen have been made with super bulky yarn, but you can also try your hand at making them in worsted weight. It’s a little trickier, but it CAN be done!

This Perceval Puffin was made completely with size 4 worsted weight yarn.

Yarn used:

Dishie Cotton: Black, White, Colonial Rose

Here are some more yarn suggestions you can use for the whole puffin family:

Bernat Blanket

Loops & Threads Chenille Home Slim

Loops & Threads Sweet Snuggles Lite

Premier Parfait XL

Big Twist Posh

Hobbii Baby Snuggle

Hobbii Toucan

I’m sure there are many others, but these ones have a GREAT variety of colors to choose from! I even made a Perceval Puffin in Premier Parfait XL yarn recently which is a size 7 jumbo yarn and I am IN LOVE. I made him using an 11.5mm hook, and it was a little challenging on my hands. But the finished puffin turned out SO AMAZING. I can’t WAIT to display him on a yarn shelf in my future yarn/craft room.

This puffin was made with Premier Parfait XL in Lavender, Tangerine, Bubblegum, Gray, and Green.

If you want to purchase the entire puffin family, you can just head to my shop here! And, make SURE you use the code BUNDLE15 for 15% off when you purchase two or more patterns!

All 3 of my Perceval Puffin patterns have become bestsellers on Etsy! They’re unique and can be amazing market makes if you sell finished items and need a new idea to add to your inventory. I’ve already sold several of my puffins, and I’ve heard they sell well at markets too!

Anyway, thanks so much for following along on my pattern designing journey and for loving on my Perceval Puffin family. :)

XOXO
